Paraffin
Naturally wax-rich crude creates both operational hurdles and niche value opportunities
Uinta Basin waxy crude has unusually high paraffin content because of how and where it was formed.
- Source Rock Chemistry: Green River Formation oils come from algal‑rich lake sediments, which generate long‑chain, waxy hydrocarbons.
- Low Thermal Maturity: Moderate maturity means fewer long chains are cracked, leaving heavier n‑alkanes that wax at warmer temps.
- Biodegradation History: Lighter components were consumed, enriching the remaining oil in heavier, wax‑forming hydrocarbons.
Investor Takeaway
- High Pour Point / Transport Challenges: Requires heating or diluent, increasing logistics costs.
- Refining Niche: Attractive to refiners configured for paraffinic feedstocks.
- Price Differential: Often trades at a discount due to handling complexity, but can command premiums in specific markets.

Baker Hughes Chemicals Solve the Issue
Erosion

CO2 Molecule
- Caused by multiple root causes including CO2 gas, H2S gas, bacteria, under deposit and rod-wear (metal on metal corrosion due to use).
- Proprietary software calculates corrosion rate and suggests proper chemical treatment on a specific application basis.

H2S Molecule
Scale
- Calcite, Siderite, Iron Sulfide and Barite are common to production.
- Barite is associated with Natural Occurring Radioactive Materials (NORM)
Emulsion Breakers
- Chemicals control emulsion challenges in Uinta Basin production.
- Treatment programs separate oil and water which assist in removal.
Paraffin Inhibitors
- Treated using Baker Hughes chemicals designed toallow the crude to be produced and transported to market.
- Inhibitors have proven effective in the Uinta Basin’s 110°F pour point waxy crude.
Bacteria
- Treated using industrial biocides through flowline solutions, bubble towers, downhole batch treatment, squeezes and surface equipment.
- Bacteria issues driven by Sulfate-Reducing Bacteria (SRB) and Acid-Producing Bacteria (APB); which cause Microbially Influenced Corrosion (MIC).
